There is a moment, early on, when Tioyacu has no music and no voices yet. The water rises from the ground so clear you can see every stone on the bottom, and it shifts from green to turquoise as the sun reaches it. At weekends the same spot fills with families from all over the valley, but at that hour it feels like somewhere else.
For people from Rioja, Tioyacu is the outing they have always known: birthdays, Sundays, visitors from out of town. For anyone travelling to the Alto Mayo, it is one of those images that stays with you. This is how to see it in peace.
When to go
On weekdays before [time] you will find it at its quietest. On Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, large groups arrive from mid-morning. If a weekend is your only option, go first thing and leave lunch for later.
Getting there from Rioja
The spring is about [minutes] from Rioja. You can take a mototaxi or a shared car, and the fare is around [S/ amount]. Agree the price before you get in and ask to be picked up at a fixed time: there is not always transport waiting for the return trip.
